"Trashion" is a blend of the words "trash" and "fashion". The concept was created by Vaho Works, a group of ardent recyclers based in Barcelona whose aim is to "salvage discarded objects".
According to them, every thing deserves a second change, and that’s why they resuscitate materials and give them a better life. This is the reason they turn PVC advertising posters and shop signs into ultra-durable and very colorful handbags, backpacks, and wallets.
They also manufacture "very black" handbags out of the inner tubes of tyres found in the trash. Each of their pieces is unique; it’s impossible to find two handbags that are the same.
The Freitag brothers are graphic designers from Zurich who were also born to recycle. In 1993 they realized that the shoulder bags they used would quickly deteriorate because of the rain and bad weather in their city. While riding their bikes to work, they noticed that the trucks moving around the city were covered with tarps made of canvas, a versatile, durable and pretty material that they soon started turning into shoulder bags. They created Freitag in 1993 and today their products are sold all around the world. They’ve diversified their offer and, in addition to shoulder bags, they now also design wallets, travel bags and balls.
They use different materials to manufacture their products, all of them are recycled: truck tarpaulin canvas as the cloth, seatbelts as handles, bicycle tyres to finish the trim and airbag fabric for the lining. These are indestructible backpacks and shoulder bags that can last a lifetime.
You can design your own bag on their website thanks to an application that allows you to cut part the part of the truck tarpaulin you like best.
Not everything that goes in the trash is waste and junk. If you look hard, you can find pieces that can be transformed into exclusive products.
