Paper Critters

Design your own paper dolls with this on-line application. Draw them, color them in, and make them evil or adorable.

3-D paper dolls are in style. Various designers are dedicating themselves exclusively to creating this type of toy, and there are several websites that offer templates you can download. If you still haven’t found a design you like, take note of this: Paper Critters.

It’s a thesis project created by JR Fabito, a student in San Francisco’s Academy of Art University’s MFA program. Fabito has designed an application that’s easy to use and that you can use not just to color the figure in (you can do that with Paint, after all), but also to customize the dolls by selecting innumerable options.

You can upload a photograph from your computer to use as a background, choose different geometrical shapes, use pencil or felt tip marker, select different colors... You also get to choose your doll’s temperament, that way each figure will have its own personality and no two will be the same.

Do you want your doll to be cute or evil? Once you decide the degree of malice or sweetness, you’ll find templates suitable to that temperament, so you can continue to decorate your future toy.

When you finish your figure you can save it, put it up on your blog using an embedded code, send it by email as an animation or (of course) print it out and put it together.

The Paper Critters Colony has close to 36,400 user-made designs. If you decide to make one, be forewarned: it looks easier than it is. If you just scribble a quick design, it’ll look a bit shabby. So, give yourself a couple of hours so you can put your creative skills to the test.
