If you are in a relationship, it’s hard to stay out of Cupid’s reach. It’s everywhere and all sorts of objects take on the shape of a heart and turn pink or red during this month. If you can manage not to celebrate, congratulations, you’re one of the lucky few. Most people end up succumbing to Cupid’s powers. Don’t believe it? Just look at the figures:

  • In the United States, the average couple spends 120$ on Valentine’s Day gifts.

  • The prices of greeting cards, stuffed animals, and chocolates all rise. Flowers double in price. For instance: 6 roses normally cost about 20€ in Spain. During February they sell for 40€.

  • In the US, nine million people buy Valentine’s Day gifts... for their pets.

  • Over 35 million heart shaped boxes of chocolate are sold.

  • Some years ago, George Clooney spent 30,000€ on a hotel room for Valentine’s Day.

  • Anything that’s shaped like a heart sells like hot cakes on Valentine’s Day: lollipops, cookies, cushions, computer mice, glasses, or chocolates.

  • Nearly 1 trillion greeting cards are sent on Valentine’s Day, a number that is only exceeded at Christmas.

  • Hallmark, a business specialized in greeting cards, has 1330 different models for Valentine’s Day.

  • The Italian city of Verona, where Shakespeare’s love story Romeo and Juliet is set, receives 1,000 love letters addressed to Juliet.

  • The Taj Mahal is the most incredible gift of love in history. Emperor Sha Jahan had it built in honor of his favorite wife, Arjumand Bano Begur, who died giving birth to their 14th child.
