Don’t let the rain hold you back! During the day, there’s no excuse, we have to go out in order to go to work, school, etc… But, what happens when it rains at night? You’re likely to just stay put on the couch. With these umbrellas, not only will you stay dry, you’ll look forward to going out so you can see them light up everything in your path. They’re luminescent umbrellas... How do they work?
Light Drops is an umbrella designed by Sang-Kyun Park that’s the perfect solution to help make you more visible on rainy nights. Its convex area is black and has built-in LED lights that automatically turn on when raindrops start falling on the umbrella. But it’s not the water that turns the lights on, it’s the pressure produced by the drops as they fall on the umbrella’s outer membrane. It’s like a portable flashlight that lights up when you strike it. And the more it rains, the brighter the lights on the umbrella. When the rain stops, the umbrella will turn itself off. Simple and brilliant.
Ligth Drops is still a prototype, but other luminescent umbrellas are already on the market. These don’t use such sophisticated technology. Instead, they run on classic triple-A batteries. One such model is the Starlight Umbrella. The fabric on this umbrella has a star pattern traced on it in LED lights. You can leave the lights on, or choose the twinkle option to simulate a starry night. It’s the perfect shelter for a pair of lovebirds to hide from the rain.
Too extravagant? If you’d rather go unnoticed, but you still want to follow the luminescent umbrella trend, get your hands on the Lighted Umbrella. It’s black, but the handle lights up in blue. Sound familiar? You’ve seen it in the film “Blade Runner”. People in Los Angeles carried it around. Philip K. Dick imagined we’d use these umbrellas in the year 2019 and its designers have gotten ahead of him by several years. These are already on the market and available in either blue or red.
LED lights, batteries, or a fluorescent handle, these umbrellas will light your way and fill any rainy day with plenty of bright light.
