Why buy toys produced on the assembly line when you can create them in your own living room? At school, they taught us to make gifts from mere sheets of paper: we called them “cut-outs”. A simple idea that’s now been revived ReadyMech, is a webpage that offers Internet users PDF files with blueprints of several toys: a smiling square ball, a Chinese doll, a robot, a pirate, a cat… They’re designed to fit on a standard-sized page (8.5x11 inches/21.6x28cm) and can be printed on any type of printer, although they’ll look better if you use a color printer.
You will need:
A printer
Thick matte paper
Scissors
Double-sided tape
Estimated time: 10-15 minutes
This same web page has also invented the ReadyCam, a pinhole camera that you can cut out and build for yourself. The camera has no lens; it produces images using light that passes through a hole. If you want one, all you have to do is print this 7-page PDF document , follow the instructions, and add a 35mm roll of film.
But, if what you need is to keep your cat busy, there’s alsofoldable cat playhouses, although these aren’t available on PDF yet (you’d need a giant sheet of paper and a special printer). These houses are made of thick, highly durable cardboard and are easy to build. There are several models available including: a fire truck, a tank, and a propeller plane. Can you imagine your cat operating one of these vehicles?
On our web site, you can buy an animated hand-cranked paper robot. It’s easy to build, there’s no cutting required, and it includes illustrated easy-to-follow instructions.
