The dangers of rotgut

The rotgut controversy

There’s a great deal of controversy about whether substituting brand-name drinks for rotgut is really a common practice. There’s a war of numbers, with some sources citing 1% and others 40%, and some even affirm that this is an urban legend. The truth is that, according to recent surveys, a large majority of young adults agree almost unanimously that many bars and discotheques serve rotgut. This is the conclusion reached in a study compiled by Esta noche Madrid, a website that specializes in nighttime leisure.

However, the Madrid City Council affirms that the use of "rotgut" in night spots around the city amounts to only 1% and that this fraud – which consists of partially or completely substituting a prestigious brand-name alcoholic beverage for a cheaper one of lesser quality- has been "practically eradicated". The Creator

I came up for the idea for Rotgutonix while under the effects of that terrible hangover; you could say it’s an invention that was born of a hangover. Everyone knows there’s a lot of rotgut being served out there. A lot of bars are getting away with poisoning us at night.”
